FOR the second time in less than a month, unknown gunmen on Monday afternoon attacked the divisional police station at Misau, headquarters of Misau Local Government Area of Bauchi State, and a commercial bank, AfriBank Plc, killing six policemen on duty as well as a civilian.
The gunmen, whose number could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Tribune gathered reportedly threw an explosive at the police station, which was a stone throw away from the bank, leading to explosion and the death of the five policemen on duty before they successfully broke into the bank from where a huge sum of money was carted away.
A top official of Misau Local Government Area, who was an eyewitness and pleaded not to be named, told journalists on phone that the gunmen invaded the town at about 3:00p.m, shooting sporadically before they attacked the police station and bank, adding that many people were injured in the attack as a result of gun shot injuries.
The council official said that five policemen were killed at the station, while the sixth policeman and the civilian were killed on the bank premises during the attack. The situation, he said, caused panic in the sleepy town.
“We started hearing gunshots all over the places and suddenly we heard a big bomb explosion at the police station. The attackers later set the station ablaze and freed all the detainees there.
Everybody was confused and running helter-skelter as they started shooting in the air in the town.
The gunmen later entred the bank and stole money,” the council official stated.
When contacted by journalists on phone, the Bauchi State Police Commissioner, Mr Ayo Ikechuwkwu Aduba, confirmed the incident, saying that the state command was yet to get full details of the attacks and the number of casualties involved.
